HopTalk - Center for Financial Economics Roundtable and Reception

The Center for Financial Economics advances knowledge of the economic forces driving the financial system through research and teaching. Join CFE Director Bob Barbera, and faculty for a roundtable discussion about how the program explores the fundamental economics of our current system and the dynamic tensions that spur change.  This will be followed by a networking reception hosted by the Center for Financial Economics Advisory Council for students interested in careers in finance.

Please join us immediately following the Hoptalk for a networking reception with current students from the Center for Financial Economics, Smart Woman Securities, and the Marshal L. Salant Investment Team.

Evergreen Museum and Library Tour

On a docent-led tour of Evergreen Museum and Library, you will see 15 rooms of the Gilded Age mansion, plus many objects in its vast collection, including the 30,000-volume John Work Garrett Library, Tiffany glass, Asian ceramics, and artwork by artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Raoul Dufy, Zelda Fitzgerald, Diego Rivera, David Driskell, and more.

Please note that due to the historical nature of the building, Evergreen is not wheelchair accessible and all tours require going up several flights of stairs. 

The shuttle will depart from the Mason Hall Circle promptly at 11:30 am.

Homewood Museum Tour

On a docent-led tour of Homewood, you will learn about the history of early 19th-century Baltimore and the people, both free and enslaved, who resided at Homewood during that time. You also will see 12 rooms of the Federal-era mansion, plus many objects in its collection, including furniture, ceramics, paintings, and silver.

Please note: The tour discusses mature themes such as slavery, violence, domestic abuse, and sexual assault, and may not be appropriate for younger visitors.

Jonathan A. Jarzyna Memorial Poker Tournament

Hosted by JHU PAWS, all proceeds go to the Maryland SPCA. In 2011 Hopkins alumni Jon Jarzyna, KSAS ’97, passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition just shy of his 38th birthday. After his wife and friends, two of Jon’s biggest loves were animals and playing poker. As a way to honor him and keep his memory alive, seven years ago his friend and classmate Matt Zaft, KSAS '97, decided to sponsor a Jonathan A. Jarzyna Memorial No Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament at Johns Hopkins University. It is a $100 buy in for alumni ($25 for undergrads), and 100% of the entry fees go to the local MSPCA as a donation in Jon’s memory.

The JHU Ladybirds present a special Alumni Weekend dance showcase including featured performances by other JHU dance groups including Josh, Lan Yun, and shakti, and a cappella groups including Take Two, Vocal Chords, and Notes of Ranvier. Alongside these groups, the Ladybirds will present their energetic and eclectic range of dance from jazz, pop, to spirited routines seen at JHU athletic events. This will be an evening showcasing JHU’s best creativity and school spirit – join us!

Galileo - Friday Showing

Brecht’s Galileo is one of the great masterpieces of modern theatre. It stages the life of Galileo, his scientific breakthroughs with the telescope and then his arrest and censorship by the Inquisition. We are collaborating with the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is the home of the Hubble and Webb telescopes. So the production is going to have projections of images from these telescopes – those gorgeous images of exoplanets, black holes, etc., which represent the very farthest the human eye can see.

Fiji Islander

Fiji Islander is the Beta Mu Chapter’s largest philanthropy event of the year. Students, staff, and alumni come together at the President’s Garden, where they can enjoy food and beer trucks, lawn games, and great music. All net proceeds from this year’s Fiji Islander will go toward helping the Baltimore Design School, a public transformation school that offers a comprehensive college preparatory program that empowers the Baltimore youth.
