City dwellers have long believed that their cities have distinct "personalities." In fact, there are on-line questionnaires that are supposed to help you find the city whose personalities most nearly match your own personality. Social scientists don't talk much about urban personalities, but they recognize that cities have distinct cultures or traditions -- pretty much the same thing. And the sociologists and geographers who have addressed this subject agree that the key to urban culture is urban history. Events and decisions of the past help to restrict each city's options and lead them down narrowing channels to their current circumstances and "personalities."
Join Dr. Matt Crenson, Johns Hopkins Professor Emeritus and an urban government and American political development expert, as he attempts to examine
Baltimore's history to find the developments and events that have shaped its
current character.
