Hop Talks: Lessons about Vaccine Refusal from Social Media
The greatest risk to human health today comes from the deluge of misleading, conflicting, and manipulated health information online. Much of this information promotes vaccine hesitancy -- the delay and refusal of vaccines despite the availability of vaccination services. Understanding shared information is critical to stemming the increasing number of vaccine-preventable outbreaks. We will discuss how artificial intelligence can aid in the analysis of social media to better understand the vaccine hesitancy movement.
JHU Press Author Meet & Greet
One of the wealthiest women in 19th-century America, Mary Elizabeth Garrett is a towering figure in the history of Johns Hopkins and the city of Baltimore -- and an unsung hero of the suffrage movement. She leveraged her transformative gift to Hopkins in 1893 to ensure that women would be admitted to our medical school. She championed women's education at other pioneering institutions such as Bryn Mawr. She was a savvy and resourceful supporter of women's suffrage. As we commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment in 2020, author Kathleen Waters Sander joins us for an Alumni Weekend discussion of her highly-regarded Garrett biography, recently published by JHU Press in paperback edition with a new foreword by Senator Barbara Mikulski.

Hop Talks: A Conversation with Suzi Weiss-Fischmann
Known worldwide as the “First Lady of Nails,” OPI Co-Founder
& Brand Ambassador Suzi Weiss-Fischmann initially made her lasting mark on
the beauty industry in 1989, when she created the first 30 OPI nail lacquers.
In her 35 years at OPI, Suzi has created thousands of iconic OPI shades,
including You Don’t Know Jacques!, Russian Navy, Bubble Bath and Cajun Shrimp.
I’m Not Really a Waitress, one of her best-known colors, has been heralded as
the perfect shade of red by women across the globe. Allure inducted this lacquer into its
Beauty Hall of Fame in 2011, after it won the Best Nail Polish award nine
times. Her memoir, which chronicles her personal journey from a life of
oppression in Hungary to a true “American Dream” story running the world’s
largest professional nail brand, shares its name with this famous shade: I’m Not Really a Waitress: How One
Woman Took Over the Beauty Industry One Color at a Time. Suzi is also known
for pioneering the development of OPI partnerships, elevating consumers’
overall brand experience. Under her guidance, OPI became the first nail care
brand to collaborate with Hollywood’s top films and celebrities, as well as
iconic companies including Coca-Cola, DELL and Ford Mustang. As Brand
